Sheela Kulkarni, British Deputy High Commission, Mumbai

Commenting on her trip to Manchester, and her experience of the city’s F&P sector courtesy of pro·manchester, Sheela Kularni said: “I spent two days in Manchester and was pleasantly surprised by the city’s interest in opportunities in India. I lived in Manchester between 2001 and 2005 and awareness of India markets has grown remarkably since then."

“Lots of companies in India have shown an interest in venturing beyond London to cities like Manchester and are realising it is an inviting prospect financially, given the cost of living and property rates."

“India has already recognised Manchester’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sector, with global organisations like Astra Zeneca, but my visit has also made us aware of opportunities with the media and creative industries – particularly with the launch of MediaCityUK."

“There is still some work to do to build connections between Manchester’s professional market and India; it’s important the city looks beyond India’s major conurbations to the tier-two towns, which also have great potential for investment."

“We are continually looking for partnerships with businesses in Manchester, which is made possible via links with organisations like pro·manchester and MIDAS. It’s great to see such an energy and pioneering spirit here. The financial market here is a real powerhouse, attracting major international names like The Bank of New York Mellon."

"UKTI is always keen to hear from Manchester businesses looking to set up in India. The UK India Business Council is encouraging this by offering incentives like free desk space for members who want to test the water and sample life in our business communities."

"There are real opportunities for North West businesses in India, especially with our financial credentials on the international market. I would encourage anyone who would like to know more about business in India to contact Sheela Kulkarni at sheela.kulkarni@fco.gov.uk.”
