The US is the UK's largest single overseas market and even though there are similarities in language and history, many companies, irrespective of size, struggle to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the US. Notwithstanding this, the UK remains the leading investor in the US with US$303 billion and the most important recipient of US foreign direct investment with total stock of US direct investment of US$364 billion at the end of 2006.
