City Living A Professional's View on City Life
Paul Widger Baker Tilly
Economic hub of the north; chic bars; real pubs; more than a dozen theatres; more Good Food Guide entries than anywhere else outside London… Whether you’re working or playing, dining or relaxing, and whether you’re red or blue (the weather is a little unpredictable!), you’ve got to love Manchester.
But living in Manchester? Why depart the leafy suburbs for the city centre? Well, that’s what I did three months ago.
Sure, the morning commute is cheaper and easier. In fact, unlike London, so much – the office, the supermarket, the pub – is within walking distance.
There’s something to do every night and the flexibility of a short walk home has, for better or worse, encouraged me to exploit that!
There’s plenty of greenery if you know where to find the little parks. Or hop on a bike or tram and you’re in the countryside in 30 minutes. My favourite, though, is Spinningfields Square – on the grass, drink in hand, with sport or a film on the big screen, and shimmering glass and steel rising all around. I really don’t mind being so close to work – I love feeling part of the community where it feels like so much is going on.
