ROYAL MAIL STAMPS APPROVAL ON TAYBURN’S DESIGNS

Royal Mail has marked the 250th anniversary of Scotland’s most famous poet with a new set of commemorative stamps.

Celebrating the birth of Robbie Burns, the stamps, which were designed by Tayburn, hit the high street yesterday and feature a reproduction of the bard’s face from a painting by Alexander Nasmyth and the title of one of his most famous verses, A Man’s A Man For A’That. The new stamps have been produced as part of the celebrations for Scotland’s ‘Homecoming’ events which are taking place throughout 2009.

The stamps are also available in a commemorative presentation pack which includes a miniature sheet featuring both new commissions along with Scotland’s country stamps. The pack also carries an information sheet on Scottish enlightenment and the philosophy behind each of the designs.

Tayburn’s relationship with the Royal Mail has a long history. In 1996, the agency designed a set of stamps to mark the 200th anniversary of Robbie Burns’ death. This was followed in 1999 with the production of four definitive stamps for Scotland depicting a saltire, thistle, lion rampant and tartan cloth to celebrate Scotland’s culture and heritage.

“It was a real opportunity to rejoice the life of a true Scottish hero,” said Erick Davidson, chairman of Tayburn. “Robbie Burns was a champion of liberalism and socialism - a Bob Dylan of the 18th Century if you like, so it was a joy to work on the project. Stamp design is a very complex process, it takes around 18 months to complete and gets the personal approval of Her Majesty, The Queen, so it’s not something for the faint hearted.”

Alastair Pether of Royal Mail added: “Because of the limitations of the actual working space, designing stamps is a hugely intricate process that requires specialist skills. Having worked with Tayburn before, we knew the agency was more than capable of delivering an exceptional design for an exceptional historical character and we’re delighted with the end result.”
