University of Salford Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week with £100K Pledge

It’s National Apprenticeship Week and University of Salford is celebrating its apprenticeship students, who showcase their hard work and determination time and time again throughout their courses.

Gabriel John, a fourth-year Quantity Surveying degree apprentice, currently balances studying alongside his role as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Gateley Vinden.

Gabriel’s educational journey began at Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton, where he studied English Language, Media Studies and History at A Level while working part-time at M&S. With no immediate plans to attend university, he moved into a full-time role in retail. Four years later, conversations with a customer introduced him to the possibilities of quantity surveying and degree apprenticeships.

“I took a bit of a leap of faith,” Gabriel said. “Initially I was apprehensive and wondered if it was right for me – but the benefits of doing a degree apprenticeship really stood out. I was ready to move on and wanted a better work-life balance.”

By choosing the apprenticeship route, Gabriel gained hands-on workplace experience alongside academic study, supported by both the University and his employer. Regular progress meetings between his link tutor and line manager ensure ongoing communication and support.

“I have definitely benefitted from the degree apprenticeship route,” he added. “I’ve gained real-world experience alongside the academic side, without student fees – which was a massive pull.”

Gabriel now works four days per week on site or in the office, alongside one day at university. Set to graduate in 2027, he plans to complete his RICS APC qualification as part of the programme.

Chris Heathcote, Director at Gateley Vinden, praised Gabriel’s development, highlighting his strong contributions and recognition at Insider’s North West Young Professionals Awards 2025.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, the University of Salford has also pledged a £100K fund available to small businesses in Salford to support apprentices aged 25 and over — helping to develop local talent and widen access to opportunity.
