Navigating Unprecedented Change Leadership Report: Stuart Wells, Managing Director, Executive Education, Alliance Manchester Business School

Over the past couple of years, leaders have been making some big shifts in how they manage teams, structure operations and prepare for the future.
One of the most striking insights uncovered from Alliance Manchester Business School’s new research into UK business leadership is not only that roles have become more complex, but how organisations are responding to that complexity.
According to the 500 senior decision-makers we surveyed: 45% have focused on improving collaboration and communication across teams 40% have invested in new technology and automation 35% have enhanced training programmes for complexity and risk management.
To me, this paints a clear picture that leaders aren’t standing still, they’re actively trying to adapt.
But the pace and breadth of change means that many are still feeling stretched.
What really caught my attention is that 31% of leaders say they’ve received no formal training to help them manage effectively, despite the fact that they’re being asked to oversee digital transformation, navigate new technologies, and make decisions in an increasingly volatile environment.
Even the most capable leaders need support when the landscape shifts this dramatically.
Peer learning, structured development and targeted upskilling are essential tools for building confidence and capability.
The organisations that will thrive in the next five years are the ones investing in their leadership now, not just in technology, but in the people who make that technology work.
Our full report explores the actions businesses are taking, where leaders feel most under pressure, and the areas where they’re calling for more support.
I encourage you to delve into the full findings on our website. It’s a valuable resource for anyone shaping leadership development or organisational strategy in 2026.
