CSI Exchange: Practical workshops to support SME growth, leadership and sustainability

5th June 2026, 11:05 am

Businesses across Greater Manchester and the wider region are operating in an increasingly complex environment. Shifting market conditions, evolving customer expectations and ongoing digital and sustainability pressures mean that many established ways of planning and managing no longer feel sufficient.

In response, the Centre for Sustainable Innovation at the University of Salford has launched CSI Exchange, a new series of practical, knowledge-exchange workshops designed specifically for SMEs, start-ups and microbusinesses in the region.

The programme brings together academic expertise and experienced practitioners to offer accessible, applied support for businesses looking to strengthen leadership, develop clearer strategy and build sustainable growth.

The workshops are designed to be practical and focused, giving participants tools and insight they can apply immediately. Sessions also create space for discussion and shared learning, recognising that many of the challenges facing SMEs are not unique, but widely felt.

Upcoming topics in the series include:

  • Leading people effectively, with a focus on trust, communication and emotional intelligence
  • Handling difficult conversations with confidence and clarity
  • Designing impactful sustainability projects aligned to industry needs and net zero priorities
  • Strategic management for SMEs operating in unpredictable conditions
  • Building a marketing strategy that works in today’s digital environment

Collectively, these sessions address some of the key areas where SME leaders are seeking support. From maintaining team engagement under pressure, to navigating uncertainty, to making sense of digital change, the series is designed to help businesses move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Each workshop is interactive and grounded in real business challenges. The emphasis is on practical application rather than theory, supporting participants to leave with clear next steps rather than abstract ideas.

For SME leaders, founders and growing businesses, this is an opportunity to step back from day-to-day pressures and focus on developing the capabilities that underpin long term success. Whether that is strengthening leadership approach, refining strategy or embedding more sustainable practices, the programme provides structured support at a time when many businesses need it most.

All workshops in the CSI Exchange series are free to attend, with more due to be announced soon.
