Member Spotlight: Alastair Loasby, Director of Sustainability, Saffery LLP

Introduce yourself

I’m the Director of Sustainability at Saffery LLP. I joined the firm at the start of the year to continue to grow our sustainability service line, having spent over a decade working with businesses to become more sustainable and responsible, from start ups and scale ups to blue chip multinationals. I’m really excited to help businesses of all sizes to prepare for the future, and create new growth opportunities through sustainability.

Career highlight

Working with Government departments to improve their environmental credentials, or with FTSE100 companies on their strategies has been fun, but my highlights have always been volunteering and supporting people in the local community. Through a corporate-charity partnership, I became a Childline counsellor, and spent many Thursday evenings talking with and hopefully helping some incredibly vulnerable young people. I’m fairly sure we saved one person’s life while they were on the phone, and it’s hard to top that.

What’s the best thing about pro-manchester?

The people. Manchester has always been a city built on relationships, and pro-manchester does a brilliant job of bringing together individuals who really want to help each other, share ideas and make things happen.

What are your priorities for 2026?

To meet as many businesses as possible as we firm up our priorities and strategy for the coming years, and to hopefully help many of them along the way to reduce their risk, prepare for new regulations, and grow their business through sustainability.

What do you think are the most important things going on in Manchester at the moment?

The spotlight we’re receiving at the moment, thanks to the new Prime Minister and his devolution agenda. Manchester is such a hive of growth, investment and activity, and it’s so exciting that that growth is increasingly being linked to broader issues like sustainability, skills and social value. We have a real opportunity to lead the way on these issues, and show that they are critical to long-term, sustainable growth.

Favourite meeting place in Manchester

I live in Lancaster actually (Atkinsons Café is my favourite up here) so I’m hoping that other Pro Manchester members can show me around and introduce me to their favourite spots!

Are there any particular types of businesses that you would like to meet?

There isn’t a business, size or sector that can’t benefit from being more sustainable, so I’d be keen to meet any and all of Pro Manchester’s members. But if I had to narrow it down, please do get in touch if you’re looking to accelerate your impact, respond to growing customer or investor demand, or preparing for new legislation.
