High Peak Business Club puts the spotlight on common legal mistakes

13th October 2026, 4:17 pm

Common mistakes made by business owners – and how to avoid them – will be tackled by a legal expert at the next monthly meeting of the High Peak Business Club.

Laura McMorland, a partner at the Manchester office of law firm Bermans, will be the keynote speaker at the breakfast event on Friday, 16 October.

The meeting will take place at Disley Golf Club from 8am to 10am.

High Peak Business Club was founded in 2014 by former MP and government minister Edwina Currie. Its meetings attract businesspeople from across the area and a range of sectors.

Edwina said: “The members come from a wide variety of businesses. Some work from home, while others have been titans of industry – they really know their stuff!

“Each meeting, with its own topic and a top speaker, attracts people with a particular interest. They often stay on and become regulars.

“We are thrilled to have Laura from Bermans as our speaker this month. What attracted me was her expertise in advising businesses, so having her demystify why businesses need lawyers will be fascinating and very useful to our members.”

Laura will discuss a range of topics aimed at business owners, including the use of template documents and AI, governance, compliance, the importance of having shareholder agreements in place, and more.

She said: “I will be giving real examples of legal issues that could have been avoided and where legal advice adds value.

“Business owners should see legal services as an investment rather than a cost, but too many end up waiting until it’s too late before seeking advice.”

The business club is open to anyone living or working in High Peak and the surrounding area.
