The Charity Commission’s decision to give the controversial LGB Alliance charitable status has been met with disbelief and sorrow by LGBTQ+ people across the UK. Submerge Festival 2022:
A giant latex pig giving birth to human-sized piglets is coming to Manchester this week!

It’s called ‘Pigpen’ and it’s part of the Submerge, a citywide festival of radical international performance and visual art in greater Manchester.

 

Taking place in iconic venues across Greater Manchester, Submerge Festival presents its first festival of experimental international performance, music and visual art in the North, 8-27 March, with artists from across the globe, alongside the next generation of UK creatives.

Saeborg and Zubin Kanga are amongst the international artists from over 10 countries bringing UK and world premieres to the first Submerge Festival in the North which launched on International Women’s Day (8^th March) with a packed out a immersive audio-visual installation in Mayfield Depot All Things Equal by artists Urban Projections (Rebecca Smith) and Loraine James

 

Continuing this week, festival highlights include: the UK premiere of Pigpen (19 March), an installation by Saeborg (Japan), which sees a giant latex pig give birth to a litter of human-sized piglets; Cyborg Soloists: The Body Electric (18 March), a series of intimate world premieres presented by Zubin Kanga (Australia) combining classical piano with cutting-edge performance art and digital instruments; and Will You Marry Me? (19 March), a site-specific performance pasted onto a billboard in the Northern Quarter, exposing the illegal practices in our daily lives.

 

Other performances include a queer dance double bill in Salford Lads Club (22 March) with choreography from Alessandro Sciarroni (Italy) and Thick and Tight, Jamal Gerald’s sex-positive-dance-party-cum-performance Jumbie at HOME (23-26 March), and The Ten Commandments at the Lowry by the legendary David Hoyle (23 March).

 

The concurrent club night and gig programme features genre pushing artists including 2 Pigs Under 1 Umbrella (Austria), Cakes Da Killa (USA), Blood Williams (Germany) and GÆRALD (Belgium); plus immersive experiences, workshops and lectures throughout the three weeks exploring everything from gender and queer theory to the politics of breastfeeding and social care.

The fourth prestigious Maggie’s Costume Ball will be at the fabulous 5* Lowry Hotel on Saturday 26^th March.

This unique event is recreating history and is based on one of the region’s most glamorous events from 1828, where generous philanthropists from around the North West, including the Lord Mayor and the Home Secretary John Peel, attended an extravagant ball to raise money for a local charity. The scene was captured in an oil painting by artist Arthur Perigal and currently hangs in Salford Art Gallery.

Jez Dolan and David Martin working as Initiative Arts are working with the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver Legacy of ’67.  In this project they want to capture the stories of LGBTQ+ people who were young adults in the ‘60s and ‘70s.  In 1967 the law in England and Wales changed to partially decriminalise homosexual acts between men.  This led to a major change for some people and had no effect at all on others.  If you were a young adult then, did this affect your life – if it did, how?

They’re interested in talking to men, women and trans people who were around at the time.  Your stories will be recorded for posterity in Archives+ at Manchester Libraries and will be the subject matter for a specially commissioned play, an exhibition, and a walking tour of the city.

They also want to recruit and train a team of volunteers to capture these stories of before and after the Sexual Offences Act of 1967, recording the social and historical impact of this legislation.  They will be offering training in oral history techniques towards the end of April.

As part of the Greater Manchester LGBTQ+ Arts and Culture Network, Oldham Coliseum were a recipient of the Network’s Progress Bursary supporting LGBTQ+ projects across the region. For their project they partnered up with the Proud Trust’s ‘Youth Out in Oldham’ group to support an artist in the development of their own craft, to deliver six creative sessions for the group.

 

‘Youth Out in Oldham’ is a youth group based in Oldham that supports young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people, or those questioning their gender or sexuality aged between 13-19. Having met with the group online, it became clear that many members were interested in the creation of music, specifically Metal music, as an artform they could see themselves pursuing. With this in mind,they appointed musician Will Walton as the recipient of the Bursary.

 

After a few thinking and jamming sessions with Will and Coliseum staff, the young people decided to write a pirate metal song, cherishing the opportunity to talk about the things that they’re passionate about as young LGBT+ people. The song has now grown into an album concept, with another song written waiting to be recorded, and album art in the works.

They have absolutely loved working on The Progress Bursary over the past few months. What has been most impressive to them at the Coliseum is the new ways in which this project has helped them work with young people, from drama to different forms of music.

 

Thanks go out to the staff at The Proud Trust, the LGBT Foundation, Will Walton, and especially the wonderful young people who contributed to creating the songs.

Stockport Answer Cancer Outreach

They have a new project starting in February called ‘Stockport Answer Cancer’ targeting men of African and Caribbean descent living in Stockport & Manchester.  The aim is to raise awareness about prostate and bowel cancers, have a better understanding of signs and symptoms to look out for, and how and where to get tested.

 

They’ll be delivering workshops virtually with professional health practitioners/specialists, as well as community pop up events.

BLUE TALK: 29th March 2022, between 2pm and 3.30pm at Manchester Cathedral.

The Ocean covers 70% of the surface of the Earth and it’s our planets largest biosphere.

We depend on it: it produces 50% of the oxygen we breath and absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions.

However, it remains largely unknown: only 19% of the seabed is mapped and its potential in terms of biotechnology is huge.

If the Ocean provides natural resources and proteins; if its natures biodiversity; if it is a source on renewable energy; if it acts as a buffer to reduce damage from extreme climate events; if it is an amazing place for tourism and recreation, then we must act to protect and restore it. Our life depends on this.

Science is clear: the ocean is facing unprecedented threats that must be addressed. If we act properly, then, those threats may become sustainable opportunities for blue growth and oceanic jobs, especially in coastal countries like the UK or Portugal.

For these reasons, Portugal and Kenya are co-hosting the 2nd United Nations Ocean Conference, in Lisbon, in late June. This conference comes at a critical moment as the world is stepping up its efforts to mobilize, create and drive solutions to meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

 

Manchester Cathedral and the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester are co-organizing a Blue Talk on these issues, to raise awareness and listen to your thoughts.

This Blue Talk will take place on 29th March 2022, between 2pm and 3.30pm at the Cathedral.

As Greater Manchester has some of the most diverse communities in the UK, it is vital that our towns and cities night time economy is diverse in its offer, reflective of, and accessible to, all of our communities across the whole city-region. We want to ensure more of our residents and visitors can access and enjoy our nightlife regardless of their age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnic background or religious beliefs. We want to celebrate the different communities and cultures seen across Greater Manchester, and everyone to enjoy the Night Time Economy.

What does Psychological Safety Mean to You? – See Poster attached:

The study  

The study wishes to explore what psychological safety means to older adults identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) regarding later life housing needs. Psychological safety refers to the ability to be truly oneself without worrying about negative consequences. A lack of psychological safety has been suggested to impact on physical, mental, and emotional health. Older LGBT adults grew up in a time where homosexuality was firstly illegal, and then regarded as a mental health disorder. Additionally, they may have experienced discrimination, stigmatisation, and harassment. It is, therefore, seen as vital to explore this concept within this population.

Why later life housing needs? 

Manchester City Council has secured housing for extra care housing schemes. These schemes offer self-contained housing options and include a variety of services to allow for independence and to remain where one lives should care needs change. Manchester City Council has been working closely with the LGBT Foundation to ensure the schemes to be LGBT friendly, however the question arose what psychological safety means to this population in relation to later life housing needs. Research on care homes (please note that these are different to extra care home schemes, investigating older LGBT adults’ views and experiences of these settings described fear of going back into the closet due to harassment and discrimination by staff, residents, and visitors. Furthermore, LGBT elders described feeling heterosexualised within care homes. They expressed that the culture of the residence was designed for heterosexual adults; alongside experiencing a lack of visibility, but also a risk to visibility. This resulted in LGBT elderly remaining isolated due to concerns of homophobia and inequality. Consequently, moving into extra care housing schemes could have similar negative consequences on mental wellbeing and older LGBT adults feeling unsafe. To prevent this from happening within the extra care housing schemes, it is important to speak to older LGBT individuals to understand this matter further.

They’re seeking older LGBTQ+ people to fill two kinds of paid roles in the project, experts by experience (people who advise the researchers based on their lived experience) and co-researchers (people involved directly in the research). Generation Rent is working with the LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity akt to research discrimination in the private rental sector. If you are a private renter, regardless of your gender identity or sexuality, it would greatly help our research if you can answer this survey about your experiences.

The Finance function within LGBT Foundation is critical to the ongoing success and day to day operation of all our services and projects. The Finance Officer will follow the established finance framework of processes and procedures to ensure the finance function runs smoothly and effectively. This role will entail working with staff and volunteers at all levels within the organisation, to ensure they are supported and advised with budget queries, expenses, invoicing, petty cash, payment authorisation and reconciliation.
