Engineering firm Farrat and the University of Salford have signed an agreement to strengthen ties and build on their partnership.

To date, the partnership has led to multiple Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, sponsored PhDs, site visits, masterclasses, and guest lectures. Farrat also sponsors a PhD through the Centre for Doctoral Training in ‘Sustainable Sound Futures’ and supports the Pemberton Scholarship Programme, sponsoring one undergraduate and three postgraduates over three years as part of the Friends of Energy House project.

The Memorandum of Understanding seeks to further cement those links and create even more value for both sides well into the future.

Altrincham-based Farrat is a global specialist in controlling vibration and thermal energy in buildings and industrial machinery, offering specialist consultancy services and the design and manufacture of solutions for complex building acoustics, industrial vibration control and load bearing thermal bridging challenges.

They work very closely with the world class expertise at the University of Salford acoustics department, which has been leading the world with its research into sound for the last 60 years. And also our team at Energy House Labs who are working to make our current and future homes more energy efficient as we move towards Net Zero.

Janet Morana, Associate Director Knowledge Exchange and Business Engagement at the University of Salford has worked with Farrat from the beginning. She said: “It is great news that we have come to this agreement together.

“The partnership has been extremely successful so far and this MOU shows that both parties are committed to working together well into the future, as we find new projects to work on.

“I didn’t anticipate, back in September 2016 when I submitted that first KTP application, that almost 10 years later we would be collaborating on further testing challenges, methodologies and technologies.”

Oliver Farrell, CEO of Farrat, said: “We are very lucky to have the University of Salford on our doorstep in Manchester and even more so that they have such strong expertise in acoustics and vibration and building physics.

“I have always enjoyed the open, collaborative and pragmatic working relationships and am proud to see that we are formalising this partnership to foster industry critical research and social impact to develop and provide opportunities for new talent.”

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships – or KTPs – provide a structured framework for businesses to access academic expertise and accelerate their innovation journey, with support from government funding.

The University of Salford has a long history of translating knowledge into solutions for a wide range of partners. We were one of the very first pioneers of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships over 50 years ago ago, taking part in the initial pilot of the scheme.
