GM LGBTQ+ Community Network Newsletter

Friday, 13th October 2023

Good Morning,

LGBTQ+ Inclusion Training with LGBT Foundation
The LGBT Foundation Training Academy runs ten-modules focused on LGBTQ+ inclusion

I just wanted to introduce you to LGBT Foundation’s Training Academy, which is for anyone wanting to increase their knowledge and confidence of LGBTQ+ inclusion at work, at home and in the community.

They offer a range of modules and packages to support your learning, no matter how much prior knowledge and experience you have with LGBTQ+ people.

Training modules are online, live, interactive group sessions with the opportunity to ask questions throughout and anonymously.

By completing all 10 Modules individuals have the opportunity to become a Champion and receive an award of Bronze, Silver or Gold as recognition of their learning. They can also become a member of The Training Academy Champion Alumni Network. They’ve worked with a diverse range of organisations in the public and public sector and all have reported high satisfaction rates, increased knowledge and confidence and feel more equipped to support their LGBT customers and colleagues.

“As an older, cis, straight person, I have had little personal contact with the LGBT community until the last few years. And with a passion for inclusion, this was something I really needed to remedy. However, I was really anxious about getting things wrong, and this made me hesitate about even applying. I’m so glad I did!” – Training Academy Champion

For more information go to Training Academy: get in touch with them at [email protected] or fill in the enquiry form here if you’d like more information.

REWARD of up to £2,000 for key information on those involved in a series of attacks on the Clonezone Store in Manchester’s Gay Village.

The Cockatoo Movie Club – The Watermelon Woman, 18th Oct, 7pm
Join them for their Monthly LGBTQIA+ Movie Night.
This free event is open to all. With an introduction to the movie and discussion afterwards.
The event is hosted by Jackie Stacey Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at Manchester University.
This month their movie will be The Watermelon Woman

The Watermelon Woman is a 1996 American romantic comedy-drama film written, directed, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The first feature film directed by a black lesbian, it stars Dunye as Cheryl, a young black lesbian working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards, a black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy” roles relegated to black actresses during the period.
Fae Richards is a fictional character created by Dunye for the film as both an amalgamation of and stand-in for Black actresses sidelined or forgotten in film history, and as a result of the film’s budget being unable to afford archive footage of real-life actresses.

The Watermelon Woman premiered at the 1996 Berlin International Film Festival. The film received generally positive reviews and is considered a landmark in New Queer Cinema. It garnered controversy for a lesbian sex scene that prompted a writer for The Washington Times to question its NEA funding, which in turn led to the NEA restructuring their grant system. In 2021, The Watermelon Woman was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

The Cockatoo Club in The Village. Location: 20 Richmond Street, Manchester, M1 3ND.

Salford City Council:
Every two years Salford City Council asks residents about their key priorities. These priorities will shape how the council plans their annual budget and allocates resources.

They are currently refreshing these priorities to ensure they continue to reflect the needs and aspirations of local people and communities.

They are committed to ensuring residents are at the heart of everything they do, and this survey provides residents with an opportunity to get involved and have their say on the things that matter most to them.

The survey can be accessed here: https://shaping.salford.gov.uk and is short and easy to fill in.

LGBTQ+ Housing and Homelessness Study:
Two universities in Wales are carrying out a national LGBTQ+ housing and homelessness survey. It’s open to anyone over 18 in the UK who identifies as LGBTQ+ and is open till the end of October.

LGBTQ+ housing/homelessness across the UK (qualtrics.com)

Are you LGBTQ+, aged 18 or over, and living in the UK? They’re trying to find out more about the problems LGBTQ+ people have with housing, and how well housing services work to support LGBTQ+ people.
This is the largest survey of it’s kind! They will be using the findings to try to improve housing and homelessness services, to make them better for LGBTQ+ people who need to use them.

If you are aged over 18, identify as LGBTQ+, and live in the UK please complete the survey! You don’t need to have been homeless to take part.
The survey is part of a bigger project. They’ll also be sending out FOIs to Local Authorities and doing face to face interviews. They’ll be writing a report, as well as publishing academic papers- let them know if you’d like a copy of the report.

The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. You will be asked questions about where you live, about yourself, and about your housing situation now and in the past. The survey will be open until 31st October 2023.
They will be very careful with the information you give them: it will be stored on Cardiff Met secure servers. They will anonymise your responses and they will make sure that you cannot be identified.
The study is led by Dr Edith England (Cardiff Metropolitan University) and Dr Neil Turnbull (Cardiff University). For more information about the study, or to discuss any concerns, please email Edith: [email protected].
