Celebrate LGBT+ History Month
LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration of the lives of LGBT+ people of the past. It is marked every February in the UK, with each year’s celebration having its own unique theme. The Proud Trust has produced a free downloadable pack for schools to celebrate LGBT+ History Month, including four engaging lesson plans developed by our expert Training and Education team.

The lesson plans are written with the National Curriculum in mind, with activities which can tie in to History, Relationships and Sex Education, Media Studies and English lessons. You can learn how to deliver the most effective LGBT+ History Month lessons at their online training course on 24th January.

If you are passionate about supporting LGBT+ young people in your school, why not take this as your cue to sign up for the Rainbow Flag Award and commit to making your school a safe, supportive and inclusive space for all students?

Benefit Concert Held in Memory of Brianna Ghey Sunday 18th Feb, from 7pm – The Brewers, Canal Street

Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies are coming together for a benefit show which is being held to mark the one year anniversary of the devastating loss of Brianna Ghey, whose horrific murder sent shockwaves throughout the UK.

Live Your Truth has been organised by trans campaigner and tv personality Jaxon Feeley, to raise funds for Peace & Mind UK, a not-for-profit organisation set up by Brianna’s mother, Esther, in memory of her daughter. The organisation aims to promote resilience, empathy and understanding among school children by funding a Mindfulness Teacher in every school across the UK. The campaign will also involve the creation of resources that teach children how to take better care of their own mental health, as well as fostering a greater understanding and respect for others and the things they may be going through.

Hosted by Gaydio’s Paris Munro and Helen Scott, the event will see performances from: JSky, Smashby, Gay Elvis, Christopher Hall, Alexa Vox, Michelle Lawson, Amrick Channa and more, plus special guests, with all performers volunteering their time in support of the cause.

The show will take place in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village at The Brewer’s on February 18th from 7pm onwards.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from ticket pass. All funds will go to Peace and Mind UK. Anyone who would like to support the cause but is unable to attend the event can donate through the crowdfunding page.

LGBTQ+ Private Rented Sector Focus Group, 19th Feb 5pm – 7pm, online

GMCA is currently consulting on the Good Landlord Charter . The Charter is intended to be the first of its kind: an ambitious new voluntary standard for landlord excellence, no matter what kind of housing they let. It would support landlords to improve practice regardless of whether they are in the private or social rented sector, mainstream or specialist housing. The Good Landlord Charter will be available to all landlords across the 10 Greater Manchester boroughs (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan)

The Charter will be a voluntary scheme for landlords who want to commit to higher standards than they are currently required to by law. It would be the first such scheme in the country open to all landlords, no matter whether they are private or social landlords, big or small.  The charter has 20 member criteria which are grouped into the following categories:

  • Affordable – e.g. properties meet EPC C as a minimum
  • Inclusive – e.g. make or facilitate reasonable adaptations to properties, where needed
  • Private and secure – e.g. tenants able to make reasonable changes to their home
  • Responsive – e.g. published, timely target response times
  • Safe and decent – e.g. any work/repairs done by a qualified or competent tradesperson
  • Supportive – e.g. a commitment to refer tenants at risk of homelessness to council
  • Well managed – e.g. landlord must be able to demonstrate accreditation or training

They have commissioned a consultancy TPAS (the Tenant Participation Advisory Service) to carry out some focus groups with private rented and social rented tenants, landlords and agents,  to gather views on the Charter. They have identified LGBTQ+ people in the private rented sector, as group to speak to in order to understand views on the draft Good Landlord Charter. There is a £40 Love to Shop voucher offered to those who take part in the focus groups

Surveys / Research / Questionnaires:

Let’s End Hate Crime
Greater Manchester is a place where everyone should feel safe to be themselves. No one should face violence, abuse or hatred just because of who they are, who they love, where they’re from, what they look like or what they believe. Hate incidents and hate crime will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester.

There is a lot of great work taking place to tackle hate crime in each area of Greater Manchester but we think we can be more effective if we work together. Which is why we developed our first Greater Manchester Hate Crime Plan in 2019 to prevent and tackle hate crime.

The current Plan looks at:

  1. How we raise awareness
  2. Improve support for victims
  3. Increase the confidence to report
  4. How we can prevent hate crime from occurring

We are now refreshing this plan for 2024 onwards and want your input to shape the future priorities and focus.

Why your views matter
If you’ve been a victim or witness of hate, we want to hear about your experiences, whether you reported it or not. Sharing your experiences and suggestions will help us to get a better understanding of what is working and what can be improved.
Please do not use this survey to report a crime. If you wish to report a crime, in an emergency please call 999, and in other situations call 101.
If you’ve been a victim or witness of hate crime, you can find out how to report it, access support and more information on letsendhatecrime.com or call 0161 200 1950.

Give us your views:

Online Survey

Please can I ask you to complete this and share with your networks so we can capture as much feedback as possible. Especially if you’ve ever witnessed or been a victim of a hate incident or hate crime in Greater Manchester in the past 5 years (since the first hate crime plan was consulted on in 2019).

Respondents will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a £150 Trafford Centre gift voucher. If relevant, complete the survey here by 1 March, share with relevant networks, or email Louis Horsley, National Voices’ Research and Insight Manager [email protected], with any questions.”
