Oldham Pride is scheduled for this weekend (July 21-23) and promises to bring a range of entertainment from local acts, musical performances and drag shows to the town centre.

Kicking off the LGBTQ+ Pride event’s later today, two films at the small cinema in Oldham Library followed by a pre-Pride party at The George Tavern from 8pm, including a showstopping cabaret and games all hosted by Oldham’s very own premier drag queen, Terri Fox.

The Pride Parade event itself will take place tomorrow, Saturday July 22, from 12pm onwards and will travel through the town centre to the Queen Elizabeth Hall where there will be community stalls, a youth event and a main stage cabaret until 7pm.  The impressive line-up of acts on offer include Kelly Wilde, Marigold Addams and The Glitter Palace Showgirls.

The party continues over at The George Tavern in the town centre from 7pm with more cabaret from Miss Santana Rouge, and Miss Mel in the DJ Hutch from 9pm.

A grand prize raffle will be drawn each day over the weekend – raffle tickets can be bought in advance for £1 from The George Tavern, Billingtons and in the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

A six-foot owl Fifi mascot and Oldham’s very own Ollie and Millie mascots will be in the town centre on the day enjoying the parade and mingling with locals.  Oldham Play Action Group will also be providing Pride themed arts and crafts in the Queen Elizabeth Hall from 10m – 7pm, perfect for families as its all free of charge!

And on Sunday, July 22, visitors can round off the celebrations by taking part in a family picnic from 1pm until 3 pm at Alexandra Park, and a traditional Pride Service at 6pm at Oldham Parish Church.

The Greater Manchester Fringe Festival is well under way for 2023.
The Greater Manchester Fringe first took place in 2012 with 6 different venues and a handful of shows in each. Since then, the Greater Manchester Fringe grew each year with more performances, more ticket sales and more venues taking part.

2023 has been another roaring success, showcasing our homegrown talent across the 10 Boroughs.

Don’t worry though if you haven’t managed to catch any of the wonderful productions, you have until 31st July, whether it be a poetry reading, one man show or a full cast production.

One such production at the kings Arms Salford is ‘EAST’ by award winning Steven Berkoff and featuring Fringe Scene regular Dale S Vicker.

Described as ‘A visceral East End of London based comedy, laced with spoken word language and contemporary issues’

The play set in the 70’s tells the tale of a working-class East End Family and their daily struggles… spoken through a more ‘Shakespeare’ language.

Be warned though .. it’s rude and crude.. so definitely not one for the kids!

Runs 20th -23rd July.
Tickets available at: https://manchester.ssboxoffice.com/events/stephen-berkoffs-east/

Cruise The Play:
 Home Mcr
The “stunning, joyful and wholeheartedly life-grabbing” (The Guardian), Olivier award nominated Cruise is the true story of what should have been Michael Spencer’s last night on earth.

When he’s diagnosed with HIV in 1984, Michael is told he’ll have four years to live – at most. On the last night of his four-year countdown, Michael decides to go out with a bang. He says his goodbyes, dances, sings, and says yes to everything and everyone… and then survives.

Written and performed with “vast charm, empathy and energy” (Evening Standard) by Jack Holden, Cruise is a celebration of queer culture. A kaleidoscopic musical and spoken word tribute to the veterans of the AIDs crisis with an irresistible 80s soundtrack. Cruise will make you laugh, cry, and inspire you to live every day as if it’s your last.

  • We hope the findings from this research can help health professionals better support men who engage in chemsex and are living with HIV.
  • Participating in the study would involve completing a brief phone call with myself followed by a questionnaire and interview, lasting 1.5-2 hours in total. Participants would also be reimbursed for their time with an e-voucher.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy:
Study Request from Charlotte Harding, she has started recruiting for her study which aims to explore lesbian and gay adults’ experiences of completing dialectical behavioural therapy. We know that lesbian and gay individuals suffer from high rates of mental health, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and trauma. Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), is a therapy that works with reducing mental health difficulties and managing self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Yet, there is little research out there around this groups lived experience of completing DBT.

Charlotte wants to explore generally how lesbian and gay adults found completing DBT but more specifically:

  • What it was like to engage in DBT as someone who identifies as gay or lesbian
  • Was DBT experienced as affirmative in nature
  • What was it like working on self-harm urges and suicidal ideation, within DBT, as a gay or lesbian person

Her study is a paid study, participants will receive a £25 e-voucher for participating in a one-hour interview to share their experiences.

Charlotte hopes to make recommendations to DBT therapists on how to adjust/improve therapy after she has analysed the data. If you wish to take part or have any questions: [email protected]

The University of York research project Understanding Experiences of Dementia explores experiences of living with dementia, including how people manage daily routines, what help and support they get (or seek), interests, activities and social groups they attend.

They want to understand what matters most to people living with dementia and will also consider challenges and thoughts about the future.

Taking part in this study will involve a one-off interview lasting around one hour, which will be filmed or audio recorded. They are looking for participants aged 55 or over who have capacity to decide for themselves whether or not they wish to take part in the research.

The aim of the research is to develop an online information resource to help inform people who are worried about dementia. The resource will also be used to train health and care professionals.

In order for this resource to serve a wide range of people living with dementia, they are really keen to include experiences of people from minority groups who are underrepresented in research.

If you are interested please contact [email protected] for more information.
