Chester Zoo

As a registered wildlife charity, we are committed to the recovery of threatened species and tackling the global challenges faced by wildlife, with science-led conservation at our core.

Zoos like ours are conservation powerhouses. Welcoming two million visitors per year, we are home to 588 animal species and over 2,500 plant species. Our unique combination of living collections, millions of visitors, scientific support and wide ranging skills can be harnessed to make a substantial contribution to the transformative change required.

All over the world, and at the zoo itself, our tireless conservationists are hard at work to enable us to fulfil our mission of ‘Preventing Extinction’. Our team of experts lead over 70 field programmes globally from our Chester base as well as working in conjunction with the IUCN on a range of programmes to fight biodiversity loss. In addition to our global conservation work, our zoo is a leading centre for education. At our Cheshire site, we train the conservationists of the future. From apprenticeship schemes, to developing innovative environmental qualifications, through to working in partnership with 13 universities and welcoming PHD students and fellows, we make sure that the best talent is developed in a live, working environment. We also welcome over 250,000 young people in conservation education each year in our purpose-built classroom facilities, as well as out in the community.
