Cornerstone Resources scales up its learning and development offering

Medium-sized businesses often sit in an awkward gap when it comes to training their people. They’ve outgrown the founder-led, entrepreneurial approach that worked at twenty staff, but rarely can justify an in-house L&D lead or team the way a larger corporate would.
It’s a gap the Chartered Association of Business Schools has linked directly to the UK’s wider productivity problem. UK labour productivity trails the rest of the G7 by a meaningful margin, and the association points to low investment in management training, and SMEs being less likely to adopt structured leadership development, as a significant part of why.
Cornerstone Resources, the Stockport-based HR consultancy, is addressing that gap directly. Following a positive launch of its learning and development function under L&D Consultant Joe Husbands, the business is now doubling down on bespoke L&D programmes built specifically for Manchester’s medium-sized businesses.
Built around your organisation, not a generic course
Rather than offering a fixed menu of one-size-fits-all training days, Cornerstone works alongside a business’s HR team and senior leadership to design programmes around what that organisation actually needs: line-management training, compliance training and leadership coaching shaped around its own values, mission and ways of working.
In response to a brilliant first year of L&D, Joe Husbands says: “Greater Manchester is home to so many ambitious organisations that are growing, evolving and investing in their people. The best learning programmes don’t start with a course; they start with a business challenge. Our role is to understand what an organisation is trying to achieve and then develop people in a way that genuinely helps them get there. Whether that’s preparing first-time managers, improving performance or helping leaders tackle difficult conversations with confidence, that’s when learning stops being a cost and starts becoming an investment.”
The approach draws on a growing library of leadership and management workshops covering everything from core manager skills and difficult conversations through to psychological safety, resilience and inclusive leadership. Rather than picking a single off-the-shelf course, businesses can browse the full workshop range and work with Joe’s team to build a package that fits their specific priorities, whether that’s onboarding first-time managers, tackling a specific skills gap, or meeting a compliance requirement properly rather than ticking a box.
Why this matters for growing businesses now
Co-Founder and Director of Cornerstone Resources, Nicci Birley, says: “Training has the greatest impact when people can see a clear link between what they are learning and the realities of their role. The bespoke training offered by Cornerstone makes that connection, helping medium-sized businesses build stronger leaders, more engaged employees and healthier workplace cultures.”
For businesses trying to work out where their training budget will do the most good, Cornerstone has also published a practical guide to what learning and development actually means for SME leaders, covering everything from manager development to onboarding, compliance and building an approach that doesn’t rely on an in-house L&D team to work.
Manchester businesses in the 50 to 150 employee range interested in a bespoke L&D programme can contact Cornerstone Resources on 0161 647 7990 or via www.cornerstoneresources.co.uk to learn more.
