Partner Michael Fletcher and Senior Associate Gareth Farrelly say they are pleased to have acted for Global Sports Data and Technology Group in successfully bringing a claim under the Solicitors Act 1974, concerning invoices raised by IPS Law LLP.

In Global Sports Data and Technology Group Ltd v IPS Law LLP, the Senior Costs Judge ruled that the relationship between the parties was a speculative, commercial joint venture, not a traditional solicitor-client retainer (either express or implied), meaning no legal fees were recoverable.

This important judgment in what was an exceptional case confirmed our client’s position that they maintained throughout that their relationship with IPS Law was a joint venture and never created an obligation on them to pay legal fees.
