Member Spotlight: James Edmondson, Clinical Negligence Partner at Clarke Willmott
11th December 2025, 11:49 am
Hi, I’m James, Clinical Negligence Partner at Clarke Willmott. I act for individuals and their families who have been impacted by negligent medical treatment; recovering compensation that is vital to maximise their rehabilitation and provide security in the background of a life-changing event. My expertise is recognised by the Law Society through its Clinical Negligence Accreditation, and I am a panel member for Action Against Medical Accidents, the UK’s leading patient safety charity.
I undertake a broad spectrum of work, but I have particular expertise in encephalitis and other brain injuries, cases involving surgical errors, amputation and cases where a person had died as a result of their treatment.
Career highlight
This summer one of my cases went before the Supreme Court, which only hears cases of the upmost importance. Most lawyers will go through their entire career without having the opportunity to do so, and I feel very privileged to be leading a case at the cutting edge of the law, which will have a lasting impact on the rights that people, who are found to have been insane, will have to bring claims against organisations that failed to protect them.
Name three words that describe your personality
Reliable, grounded and approachable, or at least that’s what I hope my clients and colleagues would say.
What’s the best thing about pro-manchester?
It provides an instant community for businesses and like-minded professionals to be a part of. As someone that has not always worked in Manchester, it offers a friendly and structured way to integrate into the business community. It’s unique; not something I have seen on this scale in other cities.
What are your priorities for 2026?
I am relatively new to Manchester, having spent my career in the South West (although I’ve come back home to the North where I’m from), so I’m keen to spread the word that our leading clinical negligence team now has a firm foothold in the North West. Nobody ever expects they will need a clinical negligence or personal injury lawyer, but if they ever do it’s good for people to know there is a trusted one close by.
What do you think are the most important things going on in Manchester at the moment?
My clients are all over the country, so I get to visit different places, but there is something special about Manchester at the moment. There is a real sense of energy and positivity about the future that is lacking in other parts of the country.
Social Mobility is really important to us at Clarke Willmott and I feel that the investment flowing into the city and the opportunities being generated can only have a positive impact on that.
Favourite meeting place in Manchester
Pot Kettle Black at Angel Gardens – they are always so friendly and there is something for everyone on the menu.
Are there any particular types of businesses that you would like to meet
Solicitors without a clinical negligence or personal injury practice who may be looking for somewhere to refer those enquiries, along with charities and other organisations that help people navigate the impact of illness, grief or injuries.
