Claude Pro is a genuinely powerful tool for smaller businesses, HOWEVER powerful does not equal safely used and secure. This article will give you insight into how to pick the right account for your business.

Understand What You Are Adopting

Before you put any controls in place, you need to understand what Claude Pro is, and what it is not.

Claude Pro is Anthropic’s paid consumer subscription tier, priced at £18/month per user (as of June 2026). It gives individuals access to Claude’s most capable models, priority access, longer context windows, and the ability to upload files and use Projects.

It is designed for individual professionals, not for teams or organisations.

It is the most widely used Claude subscription even for teams. Very few users that adopt Claude optimise the default setting to protect any organisation data which may be shared with the model to improve overall employee productivity.

Many organisational users may already have adopted Claude Pro as a private individual and may be actively using it for business related purposes without employer awareness. The implications for any data breaches which occur for an organisation are equal, whether the Claude Pro is used privately or with organisational approval.

IMPORTANT: Claude Pro has no Data Processing Agreement, no audit logging, may utilise SSO with appropriate configuration, has no data admin controls and no formal compliance documentation.

For any business handling client data, financial records, or regulated information, Claude Pro alone is insufficient.

Claude for Work / Team – The Recommended Starting Point

For most small businesses, Claude for Work (team-level subscription) is the right entry point. It provides the commercial protections that Claude Pro as a consumer tiers does not:

• Commercial DPA: A Data Processing Agreement is automatically included – essential for GDPR compliance
• No training on your data: Anthropic will not use your conversations to train models
• Admin controls: Central account management, user provisioning, and usage visibility
• Audit capability: Conversation logging to support incident response, data exfiltration monitoring and data security compliance
• Business continuity: Centralised billing and access management – not dependent on individual employee accounts

Option 3: Claude Enterprise – For Regulated Sectors or Larger Teams

If your business operates in a regulated sector (legal, financial services, healthcare, public services or accountancy), or if you have more than 20 users, Claude Enterprise provides the full security stack:

• SSO/SAML integration: Login via your existing identity provider (Microsoft Entra, Okta, Google Workspace are all supported)
• Zero Data Retention option: Inputs and outputs not stored beyond immediate processing
• BYOK encryption (coming H1 2026): Manage your own encryption keys for full data sovereignty
• SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001: Compliance-ready with audit documentation
• Custom usage policies: Set organisation-specific guardrails on what Claude can and cannot do

Claude Enterprise states it has been designed to support UK GDPR compliance and provides the contractual, technical, and operational frameworks required to use it lawfully, but compliance is shared responsibility. Anthropic provides the compliant infrastructure and contractual basis; your business must implement appropriate data governance on top of it.
