Beyond Navy Blue: How Differentiation, Culture and Purpose Create Competitive Advantage
When expertise is expected and competitors have similar products, services and pricing, what actually makes people choose one business over another?
Across professional services, businesses can find themselves competing for similar clients and talent, making similar promises and looking increasingly similar to the outside world. Being technically excellent is essential, but it doesn't necessarily make a business distinctive.
Beyond Navy Blue explores what happens when differentiation becomes a deliberate commercial strategy rather than simply a marketing exercise.
Lindsey Kidd, Managing Director of HM3 Legal, will share HM3's journey from a traditional regional law firm to a distinctive, people-first, purpose-led business and the choices that have shaped its growth.
The conversation will explore:
- How do you create genuine differentiation when your underlying expertise is broadly comparable to your competitors?
- What happens when customer experience becomes part of the product, rather than something that sits alongside it?
- How can culture translate into commercial performance?
- What role can purpose play in a commercially ambitious business?
- How do you make a brand distinctive without creating a gap between what you say and what clients and colleagues actually experience?
- And how do you know whether doing things differently is genuinely creating value?
This isn't a session about marketing a business to look different. It's about the harder question: how do you build something genuinely different, and then turn that difference into competitive advantage?
Drawing on HM3's experience of client experience, culture, purpose, technology and growth, the session will offer an honest and practical look at what has worked, what hasn't, and the compromises that come with trying to grow without losing what makes a business distinctive.
For leaders across professional services, it is an opportunity to consider their own businesses: what are we genuinely different at, what do our clients actually value, and what would happen if we stopped trying to look like everyone else?

About the Speakers:
Lindsey Kidd has spent the last nine years leading HM3 Legal through its growth from a traditional regional law firm into a distinctive, multi-site, people-first legal business.
Her focus is on how businesses can differentiate in increasingly crowded markets, using client experience, culture, purpose and technology to create genuine competitive advantage. At HM3, that approach has included becoming a B Corp, developing a deliberately strong culture and distinctive client experience, and expanding into new locations while protecting what makes the business different.
A passionate advocate for doing law differently, Lindsey regularly speaks on differentiation, culture, client experience and business growth. She brings a practical perspective on the opportunities, challenges and compromises involved in building and scaling a modern professional services business.
