Light Responsibly: Balancing Exterior Lighting, Ecology and Dark Skies

This presentation explores the growing importance of responsible exterior lighting design in protecting dark skies, supporting biodiversity and creating sustainable environments without compromising safety, functionality or aesthetics. Drawing on real-world project experience, the talk examines how poorly designed lighting can negatively impact wildlife, human wellbeing and the night-time environment, while demonstrating how thoughtful lighting strategies can achieve planning compliance and exceptional visual results simultaneously.

Topics covered include the principles of dark sky design, minimising obtrusive light, colour temperature selection, beam control, glare reduction, adaptive lighting controls and compliance with current guidance from organisations such as the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) and the Bat Conservation Trust. The presentation also highlights the impact of artificial light on protected species, including bats and nocturnal wildlife, alongside practical solutions such as low-level lighting, shielding, dimming strategies and sensitive spectral selection including warm and red-light applications.

Using case studies from hospitality, holiday parks, public realm, heritage and residential developments, the session demonstrates how exterior lighting can successfully balance ecology, planning requirements, safety and visual appeal.
