In this practical half-day webinar, Cath will help participants write with greater clarity, judgement and human impact in a world where AI and online tools are increasingly part of everyday communication.

Participants will explore how to plan, structure and refine written messages so that emails, formal reports and other professional documents are purposeful, concise, and appropriate in tone but don’t take forever to produce.

The session will emphasise what humans bring that AI cannot replace: judgement, empathy, ethical awareness, context, accountability and the ability to build trust through language. There will also be a recognition that the tools can help but with a focus on avoiding over-reliance.

Through short exercises, examples and supportive practice, attendees will acquire practical techniques for drafting, editing and reviewing their written communication so their work is clear and professional, whilst still being theirs.

Session outline:

09:30–09:45 Welcome, objectives and writing confidence check-in: what makes written communication effective?

09:45–10:20 Write for the reader: purpose, audience, structure, tone and some common errors to avoid.

10:20–10:45 Practice 1: improving a professional email

10:45–10:55 Break

10:55–11:30 Formal reports and longer documents: structure, signposting, an evidence-based approach and tools

11:30–12:05 Using AI and online tools wisely – A discussion for shared experiences, tips and warnings.

12:05–12:25 Reviewing your own writing: a checklist approach

12:25–12:30 Personal action plan, key takeaways and close

Session take aways:

· Plan written communication around a clear purpose, the specific reader and any desired outcome.

· Ensure emails are helpful and easy to understand, not a burden in the other party’s inbox.

· Structure formal reports and longer documents so key messages, evidence and recommendations are easy to follow.

· Use AI and online tools thoughtfully, rather than delegating tasks to them and hoping for the best.

· Improve the ability to critique their own work.

About the Speakers:

Catherine Brown Founder & Coach - Skilful Conversation

Catherine Brown practised as a barrister for 15 years at Kings Chambers in Manchester, and brings all of that advocacy experience with her into her coaching and training business, Skilful Conversation Limited, www.skilfulconversation.com.

Since leaving the bar, Catherine has worked globally as a trainer and coach, founding her company in 2018.

As a coach, she deploys her courtroom skills to delve beneath the surface and identify what is perhaps not being said, or any incongruity between what is being said and what has been done. She is passionate about empowering senior professionals to achieve their full potential and the impact of the coaching techniques she uses with them.

She has also distilled her vast experience from the courtroom and negotiations into a workshop on Managing Difficult Conversations, helping people break through barriers which are stopping them asking for what they want, or those who are struggling to communicate effectively.
