Introduction: Unlocking the Power of Copilot in the Workplace

In today’s fast-paced, tech-savvy world, being able to work smarter, not just harder, is a big advantage. Microsoft Copilot is changing the game by bringing the power of AI into the tools we already use, like Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and more.

But to really make the most of it, it’s not just about knowing what Copilot can do—it’s about knowing how to talk to it effectively. Think of it like giving clear instructions to a friend: the more specific and organized your input, the better and more accurate the output will be.

The top tips below will focus on how to write effective prompts that get the results you want:

  • Load up on details: To get the most relevant and accurate response, a strong prompt should be provided, this should consist of specific context, background information, and clear expectations, resulting in more accurate and relevant responses.
  • GCSE Framework: A useful context is to utilise the GCSE Framework (apologies to take people back to school years) The framework consists of four elements: Goal, Context, Source, and Expectations. Including each of these elements in a prompt helps the AI understand the request better and provide more accurate and useful responses.
  • Importance of Context: the more information and background you can provide, the better the AI can understand the request and generate relevant responses. What situation, where you are looking to apply the result, to what audience and what role you are in all assist with the most accurate results
  • Persona’s and role playing: asking the AI to assume a role is also a useful adoption and provides robust results. An example of this would be “take on the role of a researcher, what functionality and features does xxx company provide within their banking portals”
